This paper presents the subcategorization of the English verb in traditional grammar which is concerned with prescribing rules in the use of language rather than describing it. The traditionalists classified the verb into two broad categories of lexical and auxiliary verbs. The generativists on the other hand classified the auxiliaries as a separate category from the verb because of reasons of “systematic syntactic difference”. The generativists classified the verb using morphological distribution and syntactic distribution in their analysis.
